Becoming a Volunteer Coach - Frequently Asked Questions

What does a volunteer coach do?
Each volunteer coach is matched with one teen. Volunteers meet weekly with their teens to provide coaching. Volunteers have an important job: to believe in their teen and to support their success. Our coaching creates a safe sanctuary for teens to talk through issues, set goals, and find support to reach their goals.

When you believe in people and support them in their dreams, it’s amazing what they can do on their own!

Will I be trained so I know how to coach?
Yes! You are trained before you are matched with a teen. Also, additional support and training is always close at hand. A professional certified coach is assigned to each volunteer and he/she is always available for questions and support. We also offer monthly mini-workshops so you can learn more and practice your coaching skills.

What is my commitment if I become a volunteer coach?
We don't want anyone to agree to become a volunteer coach without fully understanding the commitment and what is expected. To start coaching a teen and then cancel can be shattering for the young person.

No one makes a commitment until after attending an Orientation/Training Day. After that day you tell us yes or no. If you say yes, we ask if you want to be matched now or later.

Once you are matched with a teen, the commitment continues through the end of the school year. Each volunteer meets with his or her teen every week for 30-45 minutes. There are no meetings during school breaks or summer vacations.

Where & when are the meetings between the volunteers and the teens?
All meetings are on the school site, and only when school is in session.

Meeting times are arranged to best accommodate the student's schedule along with the volunteer's availability. Meetings might be at the start of the school day, during the lunch break, during homeroom, or even during a class time. The student and volunteer establish a schedule that may vary, as needed. Our job is to arrange a good match for you, and that includes the schedule.

Is there any contact with the student outside of school or between meetings?
Volunteers and teens are not permitted to meet other than at school and as outlined above. There are no exceptions! This rule is for the safety of both the teens and the volunteers.

You or your teen may find that you need to be in contact via the phone or email to make a schedule change. That is permitted, but should be limited to only that. The students are also advised of this rule.

While a 30-45-minute meeting once a week may sound limiting, this coaching model is well proven. You will see the power of this model over time and come to trust it.

What if something comes up during the coaching that I cannot handle?
That's a perfect time to contact the professional coach assigned to support you. The role of the volunteer coach is purposely limited and has boundaries. Our volunteer coaches serve as part of a network of support for these students. When things arise that might be outside the boundaries of coaching, your coach manager is there to help you and your teen with whatever is needed.

How do I become a volunteer coach?

  • Tell us you are interested and provide your contact information in an email to:
    volunteer
  • Next, sign up with us to attend a New Volunteer Orientation & Training Day. These are scheduled at intervals throughout the year and are announced on our website and in our newsletter.
  • Before the training day, start the application process! We find that most volunteers are eager to get started. Processing of fingerprints can take 4-8 weeks, so the earlier you start the process, the sooner we can get you matched with a teen to begin coaching.

What applications do I need to complete & how do I do that?
To be matched with a teen, you will need to be fingerprinted and complete two application forms. These precautions are important to ensure the teens are safe and protected. The forms and instructions are a little further down this page under the heading: Application forms & instructions. It is a simple process and we guide you through the application steps.

Can you tell me more about the Orientation/Training Day?
Each prospective volunteer coach must attend an Orientation/Training Day. It is a full day, and is required before anyone can be matched with a teen. The day includes information about the Touch Point Connection program, time with teens who help us understand what it's like to be a teenager today, as well as coaching instruction and practice.

How do I sign up for an Orientation/Training Day?
Orientation and Training days are scheduled at intervals throughout the year and are announced on our website and in our newsletter. To learn about and sign up for our next session, please let us know by email or phone:
